FB3 Group Administration

Any person with an account on FB3 can independently create, dissolve, manage members, and manage their own membership through a web interface or the command-line tool grp.

FB3 groups can be used, among others, for the following purposes:

  • Email distribution lists: An email address is automatically created for each group in the format grp-groupname@informatik.uni-bremen.de, which forwards emails to all members.
  • Managing access rights to files and directories.
  • Managing separate print quotas (e.g., for tutors).

Depending on the specific service for which a group is primarily used, it may take a few minutes for changes to take effect. Email distribution lists, for example, are updated every five minutes, while the printing system is only updated once a day overnight.

The group management of FB3 is independent of the user groups of the ZfN.

Functionality

A group has four types of members:

  • Owner
  • Invited
  • Members
  • Suspended members

The creator of a group automatically becomes the owner. If the owning account is deleted, another member is arbitrarily chosen as the new owner. If a group has no members left due to the deletion of an account, it will be deleted.

The owner does not necessarily have to be a regular member of the group, but only regular members can be appointed as the new owner. Therefore, the owner can leave the group after their appointment, but will still remain the owner.

Group owners can:

  • Invite people to the group
  • Remove invited, member and suspended members from the group
  • Appiont another member as the new owner
  • Dissolve the group

Invited people can accept or reject the invitation.

Members can leave the group or suspend their membership.

Suspended members can fully leave the group or resume their membership.
