Practicum Area on level 0 of the MZH

In the practicum area on level 0 of the MZH, various facilities are available for courses as well as for learning and working individually or in groups. The facilities can also be used for other events, such as the Open Night of Code or Global Game Jams.

Accessing the practicum area

Access to the area requires an access chip. The practicum area is subject to a so-called area change control, which means that the access system remembers which access chips are outside or inside. As a result, access chips can only be used for entry when the chip is "outside," and only for exit when the chip is "inside."

Caution! Caution: If you swipe your access chip across the reader while the door is closing, this will trigger an area change but not open the door again.

To log in to the computers in the computer rooms described below, an account is also required.

Room Reservations

The rooms in the practicum area can be reserved for courses as well as any other events. Reservations can be requested from Kerstin Bonnet.

At times when rooms are not reserved they can be used freely.

Equipment

Printers

In the entrance area of the practicum area, laser printers are available that can be used from the computers in the computer rooms as well as from personal devices.

Switches

Warning Warning: If you want to use these switches or the below mentioned workspaces for mobile devices, you must not use WiFi at the same time, as that can lead to confusing behaviour and errors.

As an alternative to WiFi, network switches are available on some tables to which personal devices can be connected. To access the internet, authentication through a web browser at a captive portal is required.

Network cables to connect devices are not provided.

Computer Rooms

There are currently two computer rooms, one with Linux computers and one with Macs. On both the home directory will be mounted on login.

The computers can also be accessed remotely via SSH.

Workspaces for mobile devices

Currently, ten monitors with a mouse, keyboard, and integrated internet connection are available for use with mobile devices. These can be connected to laptops, tablets, etc., either with a USB-C cable or with USB-A in combination with DisplayPort or HDMI.

The internet connection, like the switches described above, is only usable after logging in through a web browser.

Projectors

Most rooms are equipped with projectors to which devices can be connected via a control panel. These are provided and managed by the media office.

Chalkboards

In various rooms in the practicum area, chalkboards are available for free use. If there is no chalk at the boards, the technical staff can provide some.

Terms of Use

In addition to the general usage regulations of the university, the following rules apply in the practicum area:

  • Removing cables or accessories from the devices is not permitted.
  • Fixed workstation computers should not be unnecessarily occupied by users with mobile devices. There are sufficient workspaces available that have been specifically prepared for this user group.
  • Connecting mobile devices is only allowed at the designated switches.
  • Power outlets in the floor tanks may not be used for powering mobile devices; only the power strips on the tables may be used.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed at the workstations.
  • Disturbances from loud conversations and phone calls should be avoided.
  • Workstations should be left clean and tidy.
  • It is not permitted to remove chairs from the computer pools.
  • Computers should not be turned off or restarted if possible.
  • When leaving the workstation temporarily, the account must be secured against unauthorized use. An abandoned workstation may not be blocked for more than 15 minutes, regardless of how many other seats are available.
  • The posted room reservation plans must be respected by all users, and the rooms must be made available for these events if necessary.
  • Opening or adjusting the paper trays on the printers or removing paper from these trays is to be avoided. Unneeded print jobs should be deleted immediately in one's own interest.
